If you’re looking for ways to entertain the kids this October “Tattie” Holidays, why not bring them to the Castle, where up to 3 children (under 16) go free with a paying adult between the 14th and 29th October? You can explore the Castle using our Scavenger Hunt, will you be lucky enough to spot everything?

You could also make a day of it and take them to the beach below the Castle to discover what hides amongst the many rock pools.

The Tattie (Scots word for “potato”) Holidays are a fortnight long break for Scottish schools in mid-October, so-called because they were the period of time that pupils left the classroom and went out in the fields to help pick the annual potato crop.  Children from the age of nine would pick potatoes from 7:30am to 4:30pm for £9 a day, up until as recently as the 1980s.

Nowadays the break is used for rest and recuperation mid-term.

We look forward to seeing you and your wee ones at the Castle this October!
