Gold Green Tourism Award for Castle

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a Gold Award in the Nationally recognised, Green Tourism Award Scheme. The scheme is the largest of it's kind in the world and covers 11 sections with 120 actions ranging from purchasing to nature and conservation. The award is the perfect recognition for our small team who work hard all year round to preserve and protect the Castle. The G.T.B.A. assessor was impressed with our Castle composter, our home-made environmentally friendly cleaning products and our popular Facebook page.

Castle Composter

We are pleased to announce that our new Castle composter is complete (give or take a few panels) and is now in use for tidying up grass cuttings and bird mess. The project, the brainwave of staff member, Amy Archer was devisied to help us to maintain our high standards with regards to asthetics and to complement our Green Tourism Assessment. Three sporting teams from the local town of Stonehaven helped us to realise the project by rallying round to carry over 70 x 15kg bags of aggregate, wooden posts and timber from the cliff-tops over-looking the Castle down the 272 steps and up to the Silver House inside. Trades teams from the Estate constructed the composter a few weeks later. The composter will be officially "opened" by Amy on Saturday 30th July at 1pm. Please feel free to come along!

Green Tourism

We are pleased to announce that in January 2011 we joined the Green Tourism Business Scheme and are currently at the "Award Pending" stage.  This will complement our ongoing preservation of the Castle and help us to protect the environment we are part of.  This process will be an invaluable learning curve and we hope to receive as high an award as possible.  Watch this space for more information, or visit our Facebook page.

Wishing Well Donation

Thanks to the generous donations of our visitors at the Castle's wishing well, we are pleased to forward a donation to the Stonehaven and District Lion's Club who support many worthy local projects and members of the community.  For more information on their work please visit their website.

New Fence Erection April 2009

In the interest of the safety of visitors to the Castle a new fence is to be erected outwith the Castle at the bottom of the steps.  Works will be being carried out during the week 27th April to 1st May 2009.  We hope these works will not cause too much inconvenience and trust visitors will understand the necessity of this work.

Cliff Stabilisation 2008

Following an inspection of the cliffs and as recommended by the surveyors in September of 2008 a programme of cliff stabilisation was carried out to the Lion's Den and the cliff face next to Benholm's Lodgings by specialist contractors.  These works were required in order to prevent any future slippage  of the cliff face which would have had a detrimental effect to the builings above.

Although a somewhat  industrial procedure, with the spring vegetation growth the wire mesh is already becoming hidden and in time is anticipated to be hidden completely.
