LocationDunnottar Castle is located just off the main A92, Stonehaven/Montrose road, less than two miles south of Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire. To help and support our committment to Green Tourism we would highy recommend use of public transport or a walk from the nearby town of Stonehaven. The car park at Dunnottar is quite small for the number of people visiting us each year so please share cars and transport wherever possible. Directions from the SouthLeave the A90 at the first Stonehaven slip road. Continue straight past the Stonehaven turning for about 1.5 miles, taking the next left, which is signposted Dunnottar Castle. The car park is located approximately 100 yards on the right. Directions from the NorthTravelling along the A90, continue past Stonehaven and take the junction signposted Montrose and Arbroath (A92). Having left the slip road continue straight on past the Stonehaven turning for about 1.5 miles and then take the next left, which is sign posted Dunnottar Castle. The car park is located approximately 100 yards on the right. SATNAV:Post Code AB39 2TL Public Transport:Excellent Public Transport links using bus services X7, 113 and M9 are offered to and from the Castle. The bus stop for this service is located on the A92, only a few minutes walk from the Castle and it will take around 15 minutes to walk from the bus stop to the cliff-tops overlooking the Castle. If you wish to take the bus from Stonehaven to Dunnottar, please make your way to Barclay Street, just off Market Square and get the bus there. Unfortunately Dunnottar is not marked on any of the timetables but tell the driver you wish to depart at Dunnottar Junction, which is only a few miles from the small village of Kineff, which is marked on the timetable. Walking:From now until October 2012 the preferrred walking route to the Castle along the Coastal Path will be closed off to tourists for essential stabilisation works to the Bervie Braes. The alternative route, whilst not so visually stunning, is around the same walking distance. The new walk starts in Stonehaven Town Centre in Market Square where you should walk South down Alladice Street turning right at the end to walk along Dunnottar Avenue (going past the Police Station) Follow the road round a few twists and bends going past a set of pedestrian crossing lights to a small road which veers off the to left shortly afterwards. This road is calling Greenden Road, but is not marked with a road sign. Follow this road to the end turning right all the way to the Castle Car Park - total distance is 2.5 miles. The alternative route is signposted with yellow signs to make sure you don't get lost. There is an opportunity during the walk to divert to walk past the Stonehaven War Memorial, another "must see" higlight of Stonehaven and gives the walker incredible views of the harbour and the North-East coastline, from here you can continue along the original Coastal path route to the Castle.
